How the map is built
What counts. A jurisdiction lights up for a provider when one of its legal entities holds a payments license there — e-money, payment institution, money transmission, banking or card acquiring — as recorded on the regulator's public register or in the provider's own regulatory disclosures.
What doesn't. Registrations the register now lists as cancelled, revoked or surrendered are left out, and so are US FinCEN money-services registrations — a registration, not a license.
Passporting. A license granted in one EEA state can be passported to the others. When a provider holds an EEA license, the other EEA states it serves are shown as passported — lighter on its map — and don't count as licenses.
Crypto (MiCA). The crypto layer is ESMA's interim register of crypto-asset service providers authorised under MiCA, counted by home member state — register data rather than directory listings. Source: ESMA; reproduced with acknowledgement, no endorsement implied.
Read it with care. A license shows where a firm is authorised, not every market it serves. Coverage follows the registers we track, so markets with the most complete public registers — the UK above all — show the fullest counts.
